Central Oregon’s Mt. Bachelor ski resort is the No. 5 ski area in North America, a new ranking by the Wall Street Journal says.
The WSJ ranking “considered only those that offer at least 100 skiable acres, receive an average of at least 50 inches of snowfall a season and have at least one operational chairlift. Then, we factored in eight different metrics, including the abundance of natural snowfall, the quality of a resort’s terrain and the liveliness of the après-ski scene.”
The overall No. 1 ski resort based on those criteria was British Columbia’s Whistler.
Palisades Tahoe in California, Jackson Hole in Wyoming, and Snowbird in Utah rounded out the top five.
Mt. Bachelor scored an overall 87.81, which included a very high score for “abundance of natural snowfall” – a measure that accounted for 50% of the scoring. Other scoring elements were “quality of a resort’s terrain” and “visitor impressions of the après-ski scene,” with terrain accounting for 40% of the overall score and the après scene worth 10%.
