The debate between Gavin Newsom and Ron DeSantis reminded me of the first debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, (“Explosive DeSantis-Newsom debate reflects nation’s culture wars,” Dec. 4). After that debate, I knew Trump would win. All you have to do is to find out who they are talking to.

Trump was talking to the single mom in Dearborn, Michigan working three jobs. Hillary Clinton was talking to academia. Who was DeSantis talking to? He was talking to the 750,000 folks who have left California since Newsom became governor. Newsom was talking to the Silicon Valley elites who live a lifestyle that precludes them from ever having to experience the toxic effects of Newsom’s misguided policies.

The take-home message from this debate for Oregonians is that we don’t want here what has been happening in California. California is becoming a two-tier bipolar state of rich and poor. It is a tinder box that is going to explode within the next five years. It is time for the ruling class to begin to relate.
