One day after midfielder Crystal Dunn announced her departure, the Portland Thorns say goodbye to a stalwart member of their coaching staff.
Goalkeeping coach Nadine Angerer announced Friday she would be departing the Thorns after 10 seasons as both a player and coach. The German national played goalkeeper for the Thorns in 2014 and 2015 and remained with the club as an assistant coach from 2016 through 2023.
“When I came to Portland 10 years ago, I knew I was signing on for something that could be special,” Angerer wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “What I didn’t know was that Soccer City USA would become my home and define a decade of my life, giving me memories as cherished as any I’ve enjoyed in my career. But even after such a blessing, it’s time for my next chapter. I want to thank the club for the amazing opportunities as both a player and coach, as well as this chance to part ways mutually and on the best terms possible.”
Angerer made 146 appearances for the German national team from 1996 to 2015, starring between the wickets in Germany’s World Cup win in 2007, when she did not allow a goal the entire tournament. She also was part of the 2003 World Cup winning team as a reserve.
In Portland, Angerer developed a reputation as one of the top goalkeeping coaches in NWSL, aiding in the development of several high-level goalkeepers including A.D. Franch and Bella Bixby.
