Oregon State will be without defender Javier Armas and coach Greg Dalby for the NCAA men’s soccer College Cup, the result of using an ineligible player during the Beavers’ quarterfinal playoff match against North Carolina.

Armas is suspended for two games and Dalby four games because Armas was ineligible to play against North Carolina with eight accumulated yellow cards during the season. Armas was hit with his eighth yellow card in the round of 16 match against SMU, which results in a suspension in the following game.

Dalby said the yellow card mistake was the result of an “accounting error.”

The NCAA ruled Thursday on suspensions for Armas and Dalby, a day in advance of Oregon State’s NCAA semifinal game against Notre Dame at Louisville, Kentucky. The 5:30 p.m. Friday is played at Lynn Family Stadium.

If the Beavers (11-5-5) beat Notre Dame (12-2-6), they’ll face the Clemson-West Virginia winner at 3 p.m. Monday for the championship.

Armas is allowed to be with the team during the match, but Dalby cannot be inside the stadium until a half hour after the match ends. OSU assistants Jarred Brookins and Sergi Nus will serve as co-head coaches for the remainder of the 2023 season.

The suspension means Armas’ college career is finished, as OSU can play a maximum of two more games this season. Armas, a senior, was a Pac-12 first team selection this past season.

“I am incredibly said for Javi that he will not be able to take part in the College Cup,” Dalby said in a statement. “At no fault of his own, he will have to lead our team from the bench this weekend in proud fashion. While I am disappointed with the NCAA’s interpretation and assessment of an accounting error, I am proudly the head coach of this program and the responsibility lies with me.

“At no point in time would I ever put my players, staff or program in jeopardy by knowingly breaking the rules. As has been the story of our season, our team’s personality and resolve will be on full display tomorrow night in the College Cup.”
